We’re back from a lovely weekend on the North Fork of Long Island. I came down with a bad cold on Thursday, so I was feeling bad for most of the trip, but we still managed to have a great time. Even the smallest cold makes me appreciate how wonderful it feels to be healthy!
We left Friday morning. Emerson was so excited to see her carseat that she practically jumped in it and then accidentally fell asleep on the drive.
It worked out well because the car was quiet for some calls Matt had to take, and we were able to have a late lunch in the adorable town of Greenport during what would have been nap time.
We had good food at a little cafe called Salamander’s on Front. They had gluten free fried fish and chips, so I was happy.
We got settled in our Air B&B so Matt could finish up some work. We stayed in an cute, old house 2 blocks from Front St. It had some quirks, so I might not recommend it, but it got the job done (we booked this 3 weeks ago!). We hoped to visit a couple of wineries in the afternoon, but with the weather too cold to sit outside, and with me not in much of a drinking mood, we decided to just visit one – Bedell Celllars.
The wine was actually very good, and we went home with a bottle of rose.
Back in Greenport, I walked Emerson into town to pick up pizza ingredients, and then we settled in for the night. The old pan in the house made our pizza super crispy, and I loved it. We watched more Transparent and called it a night pretty early.
Emerson was up at 6:30 the next day, so we were out the door by 7:30 in search of caffeine and food. I found a morning glory muffin at a market and we strolled around town with lattes.
We hung out at the waterfront park for a bit until we noticed Easter eggs and a crowd gathering for an egg hunt! Sadly, the older kids trampled the lawn and Emerson only scored 2 eggs with our help. She got overwhelmed at the start and stood in the grass and cried – it was the saddest sight:(
Luckily, the carousel opened soon afterwards, and being a horse pro and all, she was thrilled to get to ride.
We grabbed lunch at an old soda shop, and then Emerson and I spent the afternoon napping!
We stopped by Kontokosta Winery before our dinner reservation – What a beautiful tasting room!
It was worth the windy walk down to the water’s edge to see the view. I’d love to come back here in the summer.
We had dinner at Noah’s and had a wonderful experience. Emerson was a doll, we had delicious small plates, and we were able to relax and not rush through dinner like we sometimes do.
Highlights were the crab tacos, crab deviled eggs, and the mussels with rosemary fries. Oh, and the flourless chocolate cake we took home with us.
Sunday morning was delightful, as Emerson slept until 7:15 and then was so cute opening her Easter basket. She said ‘Whoaa’ as she took out each item and brought it over to us.
We went into town one last time and enjoyed a memorable breakfast at Bruce & Son. Emerson and I shared french toast and turmeric bircher muesli, which was so unique!
We hoped in the car to head to a farm on our way home. We stopped at Garden of Eve, and although the place had just opened for the season and was in disarray, we got to see turkeys, chicks, a bunny, and goats.
And then we were back home in no time. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to get out of the city! As soon as we saw the rolling hills, I started to feel more relaxed.
I hope we get to check out more of Long Island this summer.
