Matt and I will celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary in a few weeks, so we thought it was a good time for our first getaway without baby big girl Emerson in tow. My parents came up on Thursday, and after a day of playgrounds and a little sight seeing on Friday, Matt and I took off for the Willowemoc Valley in upstate New York. Despite my excitement for a break, I was sad saying goodbye. I don’t know how you working moms do it when you have to travel for a whole week! Emerson did great and barely noticed we left though.
We drove through two hours of rain and landed at Main Street Farm for lunch. This bakery/cafe/grocery was adorable and had all kinds of goodies. Matt and I shared a local trout sandwich, a pulled chicken salad, broccoli + potato soup, a strawberry + sage kombucha, and a maple glazed donut. Everything was awesome and the gf donut was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real cake donut.
Our plans for a hike fell through because of the rain so we checked out a brewery just down the street. It was packed and it felt luxorious to take our time having drinks after a long lunch.
Then we hopped back in the car and headed to our destination, The Debruce.
The hotel is simple in decor but full of character, as the original building hasn’t been changed all that much since 1880.
Our plan was total relaxation, but sadly, our dreams of laying by the pool and enjoying the grounds had to change because of the weather. It was actually nice to find ourselves with absolutely nothing to do, so we read our books and took naps.
We when woke up it had stopped raining! So we went out on about an hour-long stroll on the hotel’s trails.
The hike was grey and wet but so green and beautiful.
We kept expecting to see Mr. Tumnas the faun around every corner.
Upon returning, we got ready for dinner and made our way down to the cozy club room for drinks.
Bourbon + roaring fire = perfection.
The Debruce is a foodie’s paradise, as every stay includes not only breakfast, but a multiple course dinner in the farm/forager-to-table restaurant. We made reservations for the 8:45 seating, which got started on the late side. If I had to do it again, I’d definitely do the 6:00 because I was so hungry, and starting to get tired once the food starting coming out. Ha.
We had a cozy corner table and enjoyed 9 courses over 3 hours!
The food was really fresh, veggie-heavy, and very interesting. We had a couple of courses that involved foraged plants – def. not my favorite foods (ramps and stinging nettle), but so different from anything I’ve tried and the chef was just so passionate about sourcing food from the hotel’s land.
The morel mushrooms were amazing!
I was so happy to to see this steak arrive at 11:00pm because I was still hungry after all the plant courses:) It was a fabulous entree, especially because there was chimichurri and I had ordered a malbec! The night ended with unlimited cheeses and macarons!! I think we ate and drank too much and too close to bed because we both tossed and turned all night.
Our trip ended with an incredible breakfast (the BEST hash) and massages!! We even managed to stop by the J Crew outlet on the way home before spending a lot of time in NYC traffic. The weekend was a huge splurge and a wonderful way to celebrate this marriage milestone. The icing on the cake was being reunited with the new love of our lives when we got back home:) Thanks to my parents for making this happen!
