Day in the Life: 21 Months

Life

7:30 – I wake up and hear Emerson next door. Matt gets her up and she runs around the house until I get out of bed

7:40 – We all have breakfast – Em has yogurt and banana, I have oatmeal with peanut butter, and Matt snacks and has yogurt while packing his lunch and trying to get out the door.

7:50 – Matt leaves and Em gets upset.  She’s learning how to open our apartment door (and unfortunately, it automatically unlocks when you open the handle), so it’s often a battle to keep her away from the door when one of us leaves.

8:00 – She calms down but is still cranky.  I try to drink my tea and play with her on the floor – I can’t function until the caffeine hits.

8:40 – I’m finally awake and try to get us ready to go to the water lab (an awesome splash park), but there’s lots of tears over wanting to use my toothbrush and wanting to wear a specific sweatshirt.  I try to explain that a bathing suit is required for our fun outing!

9:15 – We’re finally ready to go after sunscreen battles and wresting to get into the stroller.  I often find that when Emerson wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, getting outside is an instant cure.

9:30 – She was thrilled and squealing with delight when she realized we were at the water lab.

It was a cooler day and early enough in the morning that it wasn’t packed and we had a great time.

10:30 – Convincing her to leave is another story, but I offered her a snack and changed her into dry clothes, and then we went over the swings park next door.   Em found two babies playing on a blanket with lots of toys, so I ended up hanging out with two nannies for 15 minutes or so.

11:00 – We start the walk home and stop for hummus.  I’m obsessed with all the options in the neighborhood and I’m frequently trying new kinds. I get Emerson a spinach and feta pie as part of her lunch.

11:30 – I make Emerson’s lunch (she promptly throws the pie on the floor when she gets some pieces of spinach in her mouth; and I snack on the new hummus with lentil crackers and throw some cauliflower in the oven to roast..  I think she ended up having avocado, peas, almond butter and jelly on toast, and strawberries.

12:15 – I put Em down for her nap!!

12:30 – There’s a weird smell in our fridge, so I clean everything out and wash out this drawer that was gross. I think the smell is better and the fridge looks much nicer.

12:45 – I make lunch – brown rice, red pepper, cauliflower, falafel (from the TJ’s mix), some salad greens, and hummus.

1:00 – I do some mindless scrolling, write last Thursday’s post, get a bunch of documents together (Matt and I are consolidating our retirement accounts from our various employers over the years), book flights for an upcoming wedding, and browse a few sales.

3:30 – Em is up and squealing, so I know she’s in a good mood and ready to play.  We split a Lara bar together (she LOVES when we eat ‘mama’s bar’), and I do a little dinner prep when she plays independantly..

4:00 – We go down to the package room to get my Target order and do a little running in the hall afterwards.

4:30 – My hall mate has a boy similar in age, so they come over to play and it’s a hoot.

5:15 – I start on dinner while we’re still hanging out.

5:40 – Our friends leave and I give Em her dinner of veggie curry. I can’t remember if I’ve shared this recipe before, but I make it every week: chickpeas, zucchini, diced tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green curry paste, and coconut milk all simmered together in a pan. She also has milk and berries.

6:15 – I clean Emerson up and start her bath. After bath, she runs around in her diaper while we wait for Matt.

6:45 – Matt is home and we all hang out until it’s time to get on PJ’s and brush teeth around 7:15.

7:15 – Matt puts Emerson to bed and I make rice for our curry.

7:45 – We eat, and then clean up the kitchen together and catch up.

8:30 – Queer Eye!!

9:30 – We rummage the pantry for a few bites of something sweet + get ready for bed.

10:15 – Get in bed and keep reading An American Marriage – it’s getting really good!

10:45 – Lights out!

I’m waiting for American Marriage to be available from the library! Can’t wait to read it, I’ve heard such good things. You have a great sleeper, are three hour naps her norm?? I have to wake my daughter up from her nap if it’s over the 2 hour mark or else she wont go to sleep at night.

I’d say 2 hour naps are the norm! And I’ve noticed that if she sleeps past 3:30/4 that she stays up playing in her crib and puts herself to sleep closer to 8 at night. Can’t wait to see what happens in the book!

My daughter is about a month younger than Emerson so I love reading these posts! Can you comment at all about how you get her to sleep until 7:30 and take such long naps? My daughter is up at 5:30am no matter what I do and naps are only about an hour and a half. I remember you going through some rough sleep stuff about a month ago so maybe we are in that as well and this will pass, fingers crossed.

As soon as the regression passed, she started sleeping a ton. I’d say a two hour nap is the norm though. Lately, she’s been going to bed closer to 8pm, so not sure if that has anything to do with her sleeping in. Also, I recently read a post from a sleep consultant and she said the room must be pitch black (with blackout curtains) in order for a toddler to sleep in past sunrise in the summer.

    15+ Hours of sleep a day–that’s incredible.

It’s part personality and part lack of stimulation. Once she gets to preschool, she’ll be awake more and much happier.

I’m not sure how to read this – she’s stimulated, awake, and happy with our activities.

What? Kids who are under stimulated tend to sleep less- brain development requires lots of sleep. Seems Em gets plenty of activity and is just a good sleeper. I have a 4 year omd sho only needs 10-11 hrs of sleep and always has, and his 2 year old sister sleeps at least 14 hrs a day.

It is incredible! Today she woke up at 7 and skipped her nap, so a lot of it just depends on the day.

Do you have a link to the veggie curry recipe? I’d love to test it out on my 18 month old.

I don’t – it started from an Indian shrimp curry recipe and is just completely different now that I’ve adapted it. I just simmer everything in one pan for like 20 minutes and use: one diced zucchini (sautéed in pan first), one can coconut milk, one can diced tomatoes (drained), one or two cloves of garlic, one can chickpeas, and lots of shakes of ginger (or fresh grated). I usually add 2 heaping tablespoons of the green curry paste at the end bc it’s a bit spicy for Em, but it’s essential to the flavor!
