It’s hard to believe that two years ago I birthed a child. It seems like so long ago.
I’m thankful I have been able to spend most of this year at home with Emerson. So much has changed in a short time, and she’s been a wonderful companion. Now that Em is able to talk, it’s amazing to think about what she’s been absorbing all along. The intonation, expressions, and phrases she uses are hilarious. The other day I hit my arm and yelled, and she ran over to me and gave me a hug and was petting the spot that got hurt with a concerned look on her face. It was the cutest.
She loves books, looking at pictures of herself, being in her crib, socializing at the gym, and rough-housing with Matt. She’s helpful and sweet. She gets very hangry and often throws fits before meals. She still loves her paci but will put it in her crib when we tell her it’s just for sleeping. She’s a great sleeper most of the time!
I found this second year of motherhood to be harder than the first – the running away, the physical testing of limits, the fits, the picky eating, the nap refusal. The first year, other than being tired, was all about rest, recovery, and cuddling. Plus, people don’t expect as much from you when you’ve just had a baby. The period from 17-22ish months has definitely tested my patience. I was skeptical of people who told me how easy the baby stage is, but of course, I totally agree now. All the cliche’s are true so far!
As Emerson is nearing two, I’m already feeling like the language development is making things easier and more rewarding. I’m so proud when Emerson says or does something new! And this stage is just so much more fun than any previous stage. Em is becoming quite social, and I’m so excited for her to start a half day toddler program when we move to Charlotte. I’m also excited for her to eat cake after we sing happy birthday on Friday night. Through books and videos of last year’s birthday, she’s kinda understands what a birthday celebration is and has been talking about it all week. We’re keeping things low-key this year and not having a party, but she’ll get to open a few gifts from our family and we’ll make the day extra special.
As I’m writing this, she actually just woke up from her nap and I can hear her singing happy birthday from her crib. Haha. Anyway, I’m super excited for my baby to turn two!! Emerson has brought more joy into my life than I ever could have imagined and I can’t wait for the year to come.

October 12, 2018 at 7:02 amHappy Birthday Emmie!! I totally agree with you that year 2 was harder than year 1 – it’s all the moving around and their desire for more independence combined with lack of words. The second time around I’m much more nervous about ages 1-3 than I am the baby stage!
