First Floor Home Tour

Charlotte Home Improvement Shopping

Welcome to my house! I can’t believe we’ve only lived here for 3 months – it feels so much like home. My neighborhood is the kind of community I’ve always dreamed of, and I’m so happy we stumbled upon this house (it’s not in a neighborhood we were originally targeting). Plus, Emerson is absolutely thrilled to have a yard and is glowing ear-to-ear whenever she plays outside.

We’ve made a lot of progress in getting the house set up, but as I’m sure you know, things can get expensive really fast. Luckily, we already had all of the furniture (except the dining chairs), so we only needed smaller items. We’ve tried to really prioritize purchases and have made a list of things to buy each month (so that we’re spreading it out a bit.)  In March, we got two rugs for the downstairs, and shades on essential windows for privacy.  In April, I’m hoping to buy some throw pillows and outdoor furniture for our patio.  Some day, we hope to paint (everything is SOO white) and buy a few nice pieces of art for the big, empty walls.

The entry area is huge, and I didn’t really know what to do with it, so I guess it’s going to remain a big open space!  I’d like to replace the light fixture eventually because it looks a little out of place to me. What do you think?

Rug from RugsUSA

We are loving the storage bench for shoes!

Bench from Ballard / Pillows  from Homegoods / Baskets from Michaels

Console from Ashley

We are using the downstairs bedroom as an office and guest room. Matt can’t really use the office though because Emerson yells and bangs on the door for him to come out:)

Bed and bedding (old) from Pottery Barn / Table on the left handmade by my mom’s great grandfather!!

Chair from my great grandmother’s twin sister / Desk & chair are too old to remember

Table from World Market (old) / Chairs from Serena & Lily / Rug from Target / Mirrored console from Ballard

I’m in love with the kitchen!

Bar stools from Joss & Main

Fridge art by Emerson:)

This wall definetely needs a statement piece of art – any ideas?  I think we will set a budget and save up and then search some galleries for something unique. Clock is an ok place holder for now, but doesn’t really go with the vibe.

Couch from Bassett (we got this 40% off, but it’s still the most expensive piece we’ve ever bought. We live on it and it’s been worth every penny) / Rug from West Elm (color discontinued) / Coffee table from West Elm (similar)

I wasn’t sure what to do with this nook, and didn’t want to part with our little NYC kitchen table, so we’re using it as a breakfast/art area for Em (we don’t use it much though).

Table from Urban Wood Goods / Chairs from Wayfair / Lamp from Etsy

We are in the process of fixing some of the drainage issues in our yard and putting some stone down on this concrete to make it look nicer. Then we’ll seed the yard with grass and cross our fingers that it grows!

Sectional from Pottery Barn (sidetone: don’t really recommend this set for the price – hasn’t held up that well).

And that’s it!

Your home is beautiful. I hope your yard issues get straightened out soon. Perhaps this is too personal to ask but which area in charlotte are you living? My husband, two young children and I currently live in Manhattan and are looking to move to Charlotte. We really want a family vibe, something quiet, and good activities for kids. BTW, I also happen to be a school psychologist!

Beautiful! For art, we wound up having personal photographs from our travels printed on canvas. The one hanging over our fireplace is a framed canvas of a picture my husband took when we were in Acadia National Park in ME. Water crashing over the rocks on the coast. Way more affordable than real art, and is so personal for us. You’ve done a great job decorating!

Thanks! I don’t know if any of our travel pics are high enough quality for this, but it’s a great idea

This is lovely! The natural light is amazing.

Is the Ashley console good quality? I’m considering it for our living room but I’d have to drive to a store out of state to see it in person and that’s not happening! Thanks 🙂

Ehh – I’d say the quality is medium and it did have a chemical smell when it arrived. That being said, it’s more of a place holder piece/just holds stuff, and many of the other options were $800-$1000. I also can’t stand having to assemble furniture, so that ruled out a lot of online furniture sites. It looks nicer than it is.

But why not look for refurbished/vintage items? You would have the same look, hard wood, but for like 150-200$… More ecologic, more economic.

Seriously? A console or sideboard for $150-200? I don’t live in NC, but in my area vintage items of that size are much more expensive.

Well, I live in Canada… should be the same. It is easy to find good looking refurbished furniture in small vintage or second hand stores. Kitchen table, office table, etc. Each between 150-250$ and great looking. Hard wood can be repainted and waxed and it feels new and doesn’t look cheap.

Thanks for the info! Yes, it’s tough to find mid-range options. I’m running into the same issues (price, quality, assembly, etc.).

Looks good! So it feels counter intuitive, but you can actually save a lot of money especially on big ticket furniture prices by working with a decorator. Their discounts are shocking—we paid 50 percent off of retail on a top of the line custom couch. Many young designers have an affordable hourly rate and , as mine is, if they are looking to get more business, will be happy to work for a good rate if they can post photos of your rooms on their Instagram accounts. Has been a revelation to us as we furnish our new house. It also kills me that I paid full price for so many years!

I had no idea! We don’t have any more big furniture to buy, but this is a great tip!

That table handmade by your mom’s great grandfather is gorgeous and so is your home. Congratulations. I agree with your comment about your foyer light fixture.

So pretty! I love that your kitchen isn’t just wall to wall cabinets, but has those little windows. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my kitchen. I don’t entire cabinet walls, and it’s nice to know there are options.

For art – you might try your public library – mine lets you borrow art. That was how I decorated my office for a while until I could buy things.

Thank you! And I didn’t know that about libraries – that’s so cool and such a great option!

Love love love. I’d say for the entry way- new Chandler light for sure you need something that dangles down more and is more dramatic because it is such a huge open space.

Another option maybe to do 2 potted plants on each side of the door. It will fill it a bit more and also give a little bit of color.
