Day in the Life: Figuring Out Two Kids

Baby Food Life Toddler

7:30 – Avery is stirring and I hear her poop. This is how I wake up most mornings:) I change her and feed her while Matt goes and gets Emerson out of her crib.

8:00 – I come downstairs as Matt is leaving for work. Em is putting on her coat with her underwear to walk Matt to his car. She comes back in and I put Avery in the bouncer so I can make breakfast for both of us. Yogurt with almond butter and raisins for Em, overnight museli with pb and bananas for me.

8:30 – We move to the couch and start setting up Rummikub (we taught Em a modified version last night) while I drink my tea. I put Avery down for a morning nap in her DockATot beside us.

9:30 – It’s a cold, rainy day and doesn’t look like we’ll make it outside, so I text two friends to see if they want to have a play date. We decide to get together in an hour or so, so Emerson and I go get dressed. On days like this when I don’t fit in a shower, I just use toner pads to freshen up my face then put on a little dew skin and mascara. Emerson chooses her unicorn Halloween costume.

10:00 – Em and I get snacks for ourselves and then she helps me straighten up a bit – she is SO excited that friends are coming over and wants to help.

10:45 – Friends arrive just as Avery is waking up.  They go up  to the loft to play while I feed Avery.

11:00 – It’s so nice to get some time with friends while the girls play. Avery enjoys watching until she gets tired again and I put her down in her bassinet.

12:30 – You know the toddlers are getting hungry when they start butting heads and arguing over toys. We moms intervene and the playdate eventually ends after Em throws a toy, slams a door, and ends up in time out.  After she calms down, she admits “I threw the toy because I want my lunch.”

Half gone when I remember to snap a pic:)

1:00 – We sit down to a late lunch – grilled cheese and turkey pepperoni on a whole wheat pita with blueberries for Emerson and salad with leftover bbq salmon, feta, nuts, and butter nut squash for me.  Plus a ‘healthy’ cookie that I made over the weekend with leftover mini M&M’s.

1:30 – Avery wakes up so we run up and get her and then finish lunch. I give Em some warnings that it’s time for her nap, but she still has a meltdown that ends with cheddar rockets on the floor. This is often the hardest transition of the day – a combination of being tired but resisting the nap. And I know the nap won’t last much longer:(  Most days, she’s still falling asleep, so we’re sticking with it for now.

2:00 – I get Em all ready for her nap and put Avery on the play mat in her room. We get cozy to read The Lion King book (Em’s favorite), but then Avery has a meltdown (hunger I think?) so I hurry through the book.

2:15 – I feed Avery and she falls asleep on me, so I enjoy the cuddles for a bit before transferring her to the DockATot so I can do a few things on the computer. I place a Target order, finish off this chocolate bar (oops), text with a friend, and try to get started on this post.  I can’t get the pictures to upload in WordPress (arg, I had just updated it), so after 45 minutes of trying to figure it out, I give up on the pictures and start on the text.

3:30 – Avery wakes up to poop (twice, ha) and I hear Em still awake upstairs. Realizing I might not have much ‘nap’ time left, I enjoy some mindless scrolling/reading and a little relaxation before going to get Emerson.

4:00 – I go up to get Emerson and she is asleep after all.  So I decide to do my physical therapy exercises and clean the kitchen. I feel kind tired/gross from the gloomy day and lack of shower, and even just the 15 minutes of movement with the therapy band make me feel so much better.

5:15 – I feed Avery again and then go upstairs to get Emerson.  I get her a snack of TJ’s Bamba and cashews.

5:45 – We turn on Disney music and Emerson works on her performances.  She’s now learning all the words to Let it Go and For the First Time in Forever:)  I’m getting super hungry and slice up some Gouda with seed crackers as a snack.

6:30 – Matt gets home!  This is a highlight of the day for Em and me.  She continues her performance for Matt while I make her dinner – smoked trout (she likes the little tins from Trader Joe’s), tater tots leftover from Sunday, and peas. Plus milk and a bowl of Panda Puffs cereal for dessert.

While Emerson eats, I heat up dinner for Matt and myself.  We ordered from the Blossoming Kitchen  since Matt has work stuff for the rest of the week and I’ll be doing dinner solo.  Our bowls are cilantro shrimp with slaw and lime noodles. Avery hangs out in the bouncer until she gets fussy and then I put her down for a cat nap in the DockATot.

8:00 – Matt does Em’s bedtime routine while I feed Avery again.

8:45 – We straighten up the kitchen, Matt answers some work emails, and we catch up. Then we have cereal for a night cap (Matt just for fun, and me because I’ll get too hungry in the middle of the night if I don’t eat before bed these days).

9:15 – We start the latest episode of The Morning Show (are y’all watching this!?) while Matt rocks Avery to sleep (I need to start a bedtime routine with her soon).

9:40 – We hear Emerson crying (very rare for her to wake back up).  I go up to see what’s wrong and she’s saying that her legs hurt (maybe they fell asleep?). I rock with her a little bit and do another story + song and she seems ok.

10:00 – We give up on the rest of the show and go up to bed.

10:20 – 15 minutes of reading Olive Kitteridge and I’m asleep [and then one 3:00am feeding!!].

Does Emerson still attend her little preschool class? Have you thought about a dance class or some type of musical performance class? She definitely seems like she would enjoy either of those. I know it can be hard with two kiddos. Twins here. Maybe just try to get on an earlier schedule for lunch/dinner to prevent the meltdowns? Easier said than done some days. It will get easier!

Thanks:) Yup – 3 days a week she goes to preschool. So Monday and Wednesday we usually try to get outside or get together with friends, or else it’s a long day. I really want to sign her up for dance, but all the classes for her age group in our area are during her nap. She’ll be starting soccer in the spring though!

I second earlier lunch and nap! I have learned the best way to avoid meltdowns is to nip them in the bud before they have a chance to happen. Why doesn’t Emerson eat dinner with you guys? I bet she would love that special family time with you! Everyone has a different routine, I know. Just curious is all.

We usually do lunch around 12, but ate later because our of playdate – should have had a bigger snack:) We do eat with her, but heating up our dinners took another 5 minutes or so, so she got started. Even when we are eating the same thing, I usually get her started a few minutes earlier just because I know she’s hungry and she takes twice as long to eat as we do. I agree about the family time, and also it seems to help her eat and sit longer to see us eating too.

I would probably have put a firm ending to the playdate at 12:00, and also nursed the baby at the same time as reading the story so that you and Emerson could enjoy it without being stressed by a crying baby.
