We had an awesome family beach week at Oak Island! We usually go to Bald Head, but after 2.5+ hours in a hot mask in the ferry line (low capacity due to COVID) last year, we decided to take a year off (you have to book big beach houses a year in advance so we weren’t sure what this summer would be like).
We loved experiencing Oak Island, especially because my in-laws will be moving there this year! There are pros and cons of both Bald Head and Oak Island, one of the major pros being that you can drive right up to the house with all the kid gear at Oak Island. The trade off is that Oak Island doesn’t have the ‘worlds away’ feeling that Bald Head has.
One of my favorite things about our family beach week is that there’s really nothing on the agenda except spending the day on the beach, sourcing/cooking dinner, and hanging out at night. It’s super relaxing, especially for the phase of life we are in.
In years past, I’ve either been pregnant, had a tiny baby, or had a toddler who made a B-line for the ocean constantly, so this year was really amazing in that I got to sit down and actually relax on the beach. Emerson happily played in the surf or in the sand with her cousins, and Avery was happy in the sand too – she seemed to know not to try and run into the ocean. I couldn’t believe how happy and occupied they were on the beach. It was glorious!
The cousins were cute together!
We had sandwiches or salads for lunch, lots of seafood for dinner (some cooking, some takeout) and cake, pie, or ice cream every night:)
And we got to go on a double date with my sister and her hubby! We had beers on the pier while we waited for our table at Koko Cabana!
The food was awesome – we shared ahi nachos and I had the citrus glazed mahi.
As sad as I was to leave, I do love getting back in our routine (sleep is always more difficult when we travel) and seeing our kitty!
I’m already excited for next year!
