My family enjoyed one last cocktail hour by the fire yesterday. We broke out the fancy fig brie and some salami that Kath & Kanz brought from Charlottesville. We sampled the Squirr-ale. That is Kanz’s original home brew brought to Bald Head when the tradition began three years ago. It tasted the same as I remembered, but it does show just how far Kanz’s beer-making skills have come since he began. I sure love having a brewer in the family… and I…

A grey and snowy island = ultimate relaxation . We all spent the majority of the day on the couch in front of the fire, but we ventured out just before cocktail hour for a little exercise. The snow and wind intensified on our walk and we barely lasted 30 minutes. I warmed up quickly with a home-brewed imperial pumpkin once we got back. Mmmmm. I switched to wine for dinner… We enjoyed all of the food that had been…
The Christmas partying continued at one of my friend’s houses right across the street from mine. His parents have a party every year and the food is always awesome. This year’s spread was Mediterranean inspired. I had a little of everything, including some un-pictured fudge, caramel popcorn corn, and truffles. I didn’t taste anything I didn’t love over the course of the evening! The booze was flowing so I also enjoyed a few lovely glasses of red vino. ‘ Santa…
I feel like all I did this weekend was eat and shop. I guess that’s what you’re supposed to do the weekend before Christmas? I would be finished with shopping, except that one store I needed to go to was closed today, so not quite. As much as I love Newbury Street, I’ll have to say that Christmas shopping is a lot easier when all the stores are located in one building and you can load the car up when…
Happy Monday…only one more to go until the Holidays!! Speaking of Holidays, the Newport mansions were decorated for Christmas and we took a lovely tour of Marble House on Sunday… We listened to an audio tour and learned all about Alva Vanderbilt and her summer “cottage.” It was the perfect activity for a cold, rainy day in December. Per the recommendation of Tina, we had lunch at the Seabreeze Cafe in Newport for hot soup and sandwiches. This was a…
Half days are awesome!!! I went to work and then came right home again:) I did a quick stint on the elliptical before Kath and Kanz arrived all bundled up and ready for a walk! We strolled down Newbury for a bit and tasted some sweeet balsamics at the Boston Olive Oil Co. before heading back home. It was so brutally cold out and now my body is itching and red with chapped skin:( As soon as Matt arrived home…
Thank you all for the Congrats! I’ve passed them along to Matt. It’s fun knowing that there are Durham readers out there too:) Friday was the perfect celebration. I took Matt to a cute Indian restaurant in the heart of the south end. We enjoyed an awesome bottle of of spicy French wine, compliments of my mom! We chose a vegetarian entrée, so we decided to order the meat appetizer sampler to get a taste of everything. I wasn’t that…
We arrived in Charlottesville just in time for another Thanksgiving [lunch]!!! And I got to have one of my favorite Thanksgiving casseroles: Karen’s Pineapple Sweet Potato: Kanz’s Rosemary Garlic Cheddar rolls and homemade imperial pumpkin ale were awesome too! Dessert was my mom’s pumpkin chiffon pie and Karen’s apple bars. Mmmmmmmmm. After lunch, we braved the [southern] cold for a hike to Jefferson’s homeland on Monticello trail. Rejuvenated by the fresh mountain air, we prepared for yet another Thanksgiving…
Thanksgiving at Matt’s was just dandy. After an hour stint at the local Gold’s gym, a beer tasting ensued. The Mad Elf Ale was BEER-tastic! It reminded me of a darker and less-sweet version of the Sam Adams Cherry Wheat. Definitely a new favorite. The other two beers were nothing to write home about and, honestly, the winter ales are all starting to blend together. Meanwhile, Matt’s mom was hard at work, cooking a fabulous dinner. I had planned on…
